About Joan Eisenstodt
Joan works with corporations, government-affiliated groups, associations, foundations, universities, hotel and conference center companies and convention and visitors bureaus to negotiate contracts, provide training, and conduct focus groups. She conducts meetings department performance audits, and facilitates the design process for meetings, conventions and conferences. She was the founding and long-time moderator of the “MIMList”, the first meetings and hospitality online community begun in 1999. She currently is active on Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook in hospitality, facilitation, education, association, meetings and travel communities. Joan blogs at www.meetingsfocus.com.
Joan serves as a hospitality industry expert witness, and is on the Editorial Advisory Board of the Journal of Convention and Event Tourism. She is currently a certification application reviewer for the Association of Destination Management Companies. She is active in the hospitality industry and in her community where she has served on education-related boards and on those for environmental stewardship. She is an adjunct faculty member for the Society of Government Meeting Professionals (SGMP.)
She served 4 years on the Board of Directors of Meeting Professionals International (MPI), an organization in which she has been active since 1979. She represented MPI on the Joint Industry Task Force on Diversity, served 3 years as a Trustee of the MPI Foundation, and was the founding Chair of the MPI Student/Faculty Committee. Eisenstodt was an MPI International Planner of the Year. Through her initiative, MPI formed a Student-Faculty Committee to address the needs of this growing community.
Joan Eisenstodt is a long-time active member of the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) and the Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA.) For ASAE, she is a recent past chair of the Ethics Committee, and has served on the Diversity Committee, Meetings and Exhibition (“M&E”) Section Council and on the Ethics Committee. ASAE’s Board of Directors, in 2011, passed the revised Standards of Conduct, applicable to all ASAE member categories, that Joan helped draft. Currently she serves on two sub-groups as an ad hoc volunteer for the Diversity & Inclusion Committee.
Joan’s PCMA activities include service on the Ethics Committee and on the Diversity Committee; as multiple year chair of the Student Task Force; on the Annual Meeting Planning Committee. She currently serves on the Education Task Force. PCMA recognized Joan as a Teacher of the Year in 1992; PCMA’s Foundation honored Joan in 2008 for Lifetime Achievement as an Educator.
Joan Eisenstodt is a member of the International Association of Facilitators (IAF) where she is an annual meeting session peer reviewer, the Green Meetings Industry Council (GMIC), the Mid-Atlantic Facilitators Network (MAFN), the World Future Society (WFS), the Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International (HSMAI), and the Destination Marketing Association International (DMAI) on whose CSR Committee she serves. She was a co-chair of the Site Profiles Panel for the APEX initiative of the Convention Industry Council (CIC), the hospitality industry’s umbrella association.
Joan was one of the first four recipients of the Pacesetter Award from the Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International and of the Pyramid Award from the International Association of Conference Centers (IACC), both for her contributions to education. She is a 2004 Inductee into the CIC Hall of Leaders, the industry’s highest honor.
Among her additional honors was induction into the Convention Industry Council (CIC) Hall of Leaders, named “Planner Partner” by the National Speakers Association, and, most recently, the recipient of IACC’s Mel Hosansky Award for Distinguished Service. She is only the second non-member to receive the honor since its inception in 1985.
